Campervan & Motorhome Hire Gippsland

Bairnsdale is the gateway to the renowned Gippsland Lakes and provides the ideal base to explore the Mitchell River and surrounding forests on a self-drive motorhome getaway. A popular spot for all water activities and outdoor adventures, Bairnsdale is a particular favourite of fishermen and campers, with lots of places to settle in for a few days, or a few weeks, and enjoy the solitude.

There are also plenty of scenic drives in the region as well as easy access to the alpine villages of Omeo, Dinner Plain and Mount Hotham. A tour of the Bataluk Cultural Trail is a must to learn about the Koorie history and culture and the Krowathunkooloong Keeping Place is where you can find artefacts and absorb the history of the Gunaikurnai people of East Gippsland.

With lots to see and do in this picturesque part of Victoria, why not drop in on some of the wineries and breweries and check out the interesting markets and top-class restaurants which are all located within a laid-back drive from the town centre. If you visit during the summer months you can also pick your own fruit at the many orchards and berry farms.

While Bairnsdale is a commercial centre for the local wool, dairy and timber industries, it is also home to the historic Romanesque church, St Mary’s, built at the beginning of the 19th century. Here you can see the murals by Italian artist Francesco Floreani, which attract around 80,000 visitors to the church every year.

The Gippsland region is an ever-changing landscape with spectacular national parks, massive lakes and endless waterways to discover. The charming coastal and historic villages provide the perfect settings for casual lunches after a morning of hiking or skiing and intimate dinners if you don’t feel like catching your own. And all within a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Melbourne.
