Tour Down Under

Cycling is the new golf!

And the Tour Down Under is South Australia’s biggest event. And what an event it is!

First staged in 1999, the event is into its 18th year and has grown year on year to become the biggest cycling race in the southern hemisphere. In 2008 TDU became part of the esteemed UCI WorldTour and in doing so became the first event outside of Europe to do so. It is held in January every year and is the first event on the international cycling calendar.

TDU takes in some magnificent South Australian sites – with stages taking in wide golden beaches beaches, through historic country town and world-famous wine regions before the final stage through the mean streets of Adelaide.

The 2017 event will be held from 14-22 January 2017.

This is not an event just for the athletes either. There are a number of events that you can participate in as a cyclist, whatever your level of ability and fitness.

The Subaru Breakaway Series enables you to ride a stage of the tour, the Bupa Challenge Tour enables you to ride a stage, or part of a stage with a team or corporate group, the Norton Summit Time Trial and finally the Bupa Mini Tour for Kids and the Bupa Family Ride round things off nicely and make sure there is something for the whole family.

Following the tour in your Let’s Go Motorhome is an ideal way to watch the race; add a bike rack to your motorhome, hook up your bike and you can really be a part of it.

Check out our recommended itinerary to Adelaide and you can make it a proper holiday either before or after the tour. Start in Melbourne and head over for the TDU, or start in Adelaide, follow the Tour and then head to Melbourne.
