Roving retirees: Bucket list places in Australia for Grey Nomads
Did you know most grey nomads cover around 300 kilometres across Australia each day during their travels? Offsetting a lifetime of hard work and usually tied to just one location, today’s grey nomads are finding excellent ways to explore Australia.
Whilst many folks journey to the same destination each year to catch up with family and friends, we have collated some spots we feel should be on every grey nomad’s bucket list.
Go adventurous
Trips to the Red Centre can seem daunting, but a little research and preparation will prove to be one of the most rewarding adventures you could ever embark on. From learning about Aboriginal culture and experiencing extraordinary sacred sites, to days spent in awe beside the world’s most famous rock, or looking up at the night sky, there is much to take in. If you can carve out a good month or so, be sure to pack in a trip to Kakadu National Park as part of your trip and lose yourself in an area which boasts wetlands, rivers, sandstone escarpments, 2,000 plant species and countless animals. Distractions? Not around here!
For something truly adrenaline-inducing, have a look at snorkelling with sharks in WA. The World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Coast offers the world’s longest reef, with an enormous array of coral, fish species, dolphins, turtles and more. Between April and August, whale sharks can be found in the area. Find a local, approved tour group and plunge in the sea alongside them.
Go and relax
Now is the time to find yourself a secluded spot for some serious beach time. The Whitsundays, Margaret River, Byron Bay, Mandalay Beach, Noosa, Wineglass Bay… the options across this incredible country are endless. Be sure to check local wildlife movements so you can enjoy all the swim and surf you’re after, and local rainy seasons so you can catch the most sunrays.
If beaches aren’t your thing, consider a wine escape in one of Australia’s top wine regions – from the Barossa Valley in South Australia to Victoria’s Yarra Valley or New South Wales’ Hunter Region, there are plenty of escapes on offer to suit every taste (and palette!).
Have you been really getting into your yoga practice recently? Take a look at some of the yoga retreats on offer all over Australia to really take it to the next level. Many retreats are located near or in spa resorts too, so you can enjoy a true retreat in all senses.
Go culture
Australia has really grown into a culture destination, offering experiences ranging from theatre to art, live music, talks, events and more. Why not take a trip to the world-famous art gallery, Mona, which has put Tasmania firmly on the map? A tour around the gallery – including the boat ride to its harbourside location – is like none-other.
If you’re in New South Wales, check out the Bondi Sculpture by the Sea annual art event, and national galleries in town. Melbourne too is home to the National Gallery of Victoria, which hosts a number of international exhibitions, with the National Gallery of Australia found in Canberra.
