Licence requirements to drive a motorhome or campervan
The best way to experience Australia’s vast natural wonders is through a motorhome or campervan. With your accommodation on wheels, it’s a convenient and enjoyable way to explore. If you’re considering hiring a motorhome or campervan for your next self-drive journey, you may be wondering what licence you need. In this blog, we’ll outline the licencing requirements and provide some driving recommendations to give you the confidence you need to operate our vehicles on your next adventure.
Australian driver’s licence requirements
If you’re an Australian driver, you won’t need a special licence to operate our motorhomes or campervans. All our vehicles can be driven with a standard car licence that’s current and valid. Provisional or probationary licence holders and learner drivers are not permitted to drive our vehicles. If you hold a full licence and have no less than 12 months driving experience, you’re good to go!
International driver’s licence requirements
International visitors planning to hire a motorhome for their Australian adventure can use their overseas licence to drive our vehicles. The licence must be unrestricted, meaning it has not been cancelled or revoked. If your licence is in a language other than English, you will need to carry an official English translation of your licence or an international driving permit. These requirements may vary between different states and territories in Australia.

Driving recommendations
To ensure your safety and enjoyment during the trip, we recommend you take frequent breaks every 2-hours. This allows you to stretch, rest and either switch drivers or prepare for the next driving period.
We also highly recommend you don’t drive at night. It’s much harder to see your surroundings at night which makes it more dangerous to safely drive. There can often be wild animals in regional areas, such as kangaroos, and you don’t want to risk colliding with them.
The size of the vehicle means you will need to be careful when making turns. Ensure the turns you make are long and wide. Make sure you put an adequate distance between yourself and the drivers in front of you to avoid any risks.
When you park your motorhome, we recommend having someone outside to help you determine the distance between your vehicle and others around you, as well as how aligned you are within the space. If you’re travelling alone, you can ask a staff member at the park to assist you.
With the licence requirements and driving recommendations in mind, you’re ready to embark on your next self-drive journey!
